General information about Insects

The army of insects which cover our land areas are near to 1,5 million different species.Today there are up to 750,000 different insects which have been recorded.

The adaptability of these insects is quite fantastic. For example the silverfish which can survive in the smallest damp corner of a room or the butterflies which live in fields and forests, the European mole cricket who lives under the earth, the water beetle in streams and ponds or the bark beetle hidden in trees and stumps. The hectic dragonfly, the stubborn scale insects, the busy ants the flies and bees, cockroaches and blood sucking gnats and midges.Just this short list shows how easy these insects can survive.

The function of the insects:

  • As pollinator of plants and flowers,
  • as circulator of seeds,
  • as a protection force for endangered species,
  • as tidier and gravedigger
  • and as helper for degeneration and decompostion.

Insects play an important role for the circle of life.

The problems arise when the territories of the insects are destroyed by human beings and the insects are forced to invade our lives and boundaries.

Which insects effect us most and how we can fight them off will be explained in the next pages.

Ants

Only within the last century have scientists realised just how important the ants are for our nature. They are responsible for so many things which keeps soil , forests and fields free of pests, keeping the environment clean.

Ants love sugar and anything sweet. That's why the red ant (Lasius brunneus) will find it's way into most buildings.

The fear of most housewives is a street of ants going through their homes. The entrances have to be found, holes blocked and their paths covered with talcolm powder.

Nesensohn products can hinder such problems on a long term basis.

Bees

The honey bee originates from the tropical areas of south- east Asia.
Human beings helped spread them across the earth. The bees built colonies with one queen , and about 30000 up to 70000 workers, and 1000 drones. They are the most important insect pollinaters of flowering plants.

The humans have an ambivalent relationship towards bees, they dislike the bees presence due to her sting, but relish on her honey and enjoy the smell of handmade wax candles.

Bees are vegetarian !
They only use their sting in self defence.Their sting has a hook which stays in the skin. Once they fly away their thorn is wripped out and the poison flows into the wound- the bee then dies. The thorn should be removed as it can continue to let poison flow.

Strong reactions to bee stings are not uncommen.Every year approx. 20 people die from bee stings.
Some people develop strong allergies to stings and can go into shock.

There are four allergy stage

Light reaction:
Sickness, fear, itchiness, and rash

Middle reaction:
Addtional tightness in the chest, problems with breathing, muscle pains and vomiting.

High reaction:
Addtional drowsiness, lack of strength, fear of death, speech problems and respiratory distress.

Shock reaction:
Collapse, fall of blood pressure, lack of control over bowel and bladder movement.

In general it usually hits people hard over the age of 30. As younger people have a better heart circulation. 99 % of deaths are not caused by the bees sting , but are due to shock .

Old household remedies for stings are:

  • Rubbing the sting with tomatoe leaves
  • One of the most practised and easiest ways of relief is rubbing the area with urine.
  • Rubbing urine on the area or half an onion
  • Swelling rubbed with half a garlic clove
  • Ribwort leaves rubbed on the area
  • Crushed Aspirin tablets, mixed with spit and then spread on the area

Ideal is the Nesensohn protection for windows and doors, hindering the insects to enter in the first place.

Wasps

Wasps are the most varied amongst the hymenopterous insects.

Wasps are famous for their highly developed parental care and artistry.
Alot of wasps are predacious, they feed themselves on nectar and pollen, where as their larves will be fed on other insects and spiders larvae.
This keeps the balance of nature. They are also pollinators.
But they are also responsible for carrying bacteria onto food. The females can sting, and wasps are more aggresive and dangerous than bees.

Strong reactions to wasp stings are not uncommen.Every year approx. 20 people die from wasp stings. Some people develop strong allergies to stings and can go into shock.

Flies

Bad smells which disgust us are on the other hand liked and attracted by flies.
A fly has only two wings where as most other insects posess four.
Flies can fly quick and are as acrobatic as the dragonfly.

The common house-fly (Musca-domestica) lays her 60-200 eggs on dung, carrion and decaying food. The maggots hatch after 24 hours. After 10- 14 days it is possible for them to reproduce. Therefore it is quite frightening to think how many billion flies are reproduced each year-it is a relief to know that they are eaten by other animals and insects.

Another relative is the blue- bottle fly, like the house fly she lays her eggs the same way.

Flies carry bacillus and germs onto food and are for the food industry a big problem. They are responsible for gastric bugs and can spread to humans bacteria which cause infections and stomach inflammation which in turn can cause cancer. Dr. Peter Grubel scientist from Boston, said that up to 6 million bacteria are carried on the body of a fly and over 40 million inside. The fly is just one big microbe carrier.

Saying all that, flies do still play an important role in the food chain for other animals.

We show them their place by installing Nesensohn fly screens.

Gnats and mosquitos

Only the females bite. They need the blood for their reproduction.

They don't actually bite, thier tale has a hook which saws through the skin, then with a sucking action it gets the blood. The blood doesn't clot as the spit of the insect stops it from doing so, and it is the spit which causes the itching and welts.

Gnats and mosquitos have an excellent sense of smell. They can even locate their favourite blood group. They prefare people with light skin rather than dark. Women tend to suffer more than men. They follow the smell of urine and sweat. Within seconds they have attacked. After 10-24 hours is swelling and irritation around the bite. That's when the "scratching" starts, and the skin can become infected.

Old household remedies for stings are:

  • Rubbing the sting with tomatoe leaves
  • One of the most practised and easiest ways of relief is rubbing the area with urine.
  • Rubbing urine on the area or half an onion for 2 minutes
  • Swelling rubbed with half a garlic clove

Mice

What have mice got to do with insect protection?

Well- the common mouse can cause alot of hygiene problems in the home and workplace. They carry all germs and should not be underestimated.

The common mouse has 59 different species from Europe to north Africa, across Siberia to China and Japan. They love warmth and only leave their homes when outside is dry and sunny. They can find any hole in a building and can use secret gangways through roofs and cellars. They know when to hide.

If they face danger, they can climb, jump and hop out of range. They have the intelligence to leave their space when darkness falls and also to be patient. If the mouse didn't have so many enemies- they would be taking over the world. They mate all year, every female produces up to 5 to 6 times a year and up to 8 young by each litter. The young are ready to reproduce after 8 - 10 weeks. People say that the mouse would survive over the human beings.

Nothing is safe from their teeth. They gnaw through walls , furniture, doors, books, meat and cheese, bread, flour and fat. They love grain and fruit, sweets and juices and milk, and like to collect food.

Even so they also play a role in the food chain and we must learn to protect ourelves against these rodents- by using Nesensohn products you can achieve this.

Spiders

If we actually knew just how many various spiders inhabited our gardens, forests and fields, cities and countryside, moor and marshlands our fear would be even worse than it already is.

But it's the truth- spiders are the mostly spread insects across the earth, approx. 30.000 different species. Once you start to realise how many other insects they feed on then we beginn to appreciate their existence.

It may sound exaggerating, but experts have announced that the insects would have taken over the planet by now if it wasn't for the spiders. For example in England they calculated that annually spiders killed more insects than the whole population of the British Isles, and England isn't a country where spiders are in abundance.

Alot of people find spiders repulsive, and many have a spider phobia.

Even though spiders are needed, we would like to keep them out of our homes. With Nesensohn spider screens on doors and windows it can protect you against them entering.

Erotic

Now you must be thinking what does insect protection have to do with this subject??

Let us ask you a question in return:
Do you get frequently bitten by mosquitos and gnats? CONGRATULATIONS!

You are producing an enormous amount of sex pheromone, these in return attract the insects magically towards you. This is what scientists in France and Finnland found out.

Our tip for people with such an aura:
Women before their menstruation and during ovulation, and men with high testosterone levels should shower frequently. This will help against insect attacks.

Our next hint: enjoy your love life but protect yourselves against insects with Nesensohn Screens for doors and windows and keep the blighters out !

Pesticides-Poison for the environment and your health

Chemical agents used in insecticides are a danger to our health and environment.

Under no circumstances are they harmless for humans and animals as the advertising makes us believe. Hence it is imperative to dispense with pesticides, as we would say:
"Avoid them like the pest (-ticide)"!

  • The air in peoples rooms have more noxious substances present than outdoors. Due to the use of chemical cleaning agents and sprays and room deodorants we are being confronted with lots of hidden risks:
  • There are few chemical agents, for use indoors, which have been certified and passed as safe.
  • With time a large concentration of substances can cause long term
    harm.
  • These substances can be stored dormant in books, furniture, carpets and other synthetics, and after a while seep out again. Which makes it nearly impossible to completely decontaminate the rooms.
  • The decomposition of such chemical substances is a slower process than in the outdoors.
  • Children and the sick are more susceptible to such poisons, sometimes up to 100,000 more times in comparison to a healthy adult, and it is such people who spend alot of time indoors.

It doesn't always need to be chemicals. An effective way is by installing insect protection from Nesensohn - with various possibilities and a high quality with remaining effects, aesthetic and friendly to the environment.
